How to remove MAP sensor?

I have a 2003 CL55 which needs a new map sensor. I have located it and am looking for some pointers on how to remove it. I can see the passenger side air box needs to come off, but even then it looks tight. Does the throttle body need to be removed?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I figured it out. I took off the throttle body as well as the air boxes. It is a huge pain in the *** to get the bolt out that is closest to the front of the motor. I had to grind down a 1/4 inch socket to get it off, and even from there it took 20 minutes of fighting it. I'm a little concerned about how I'm going to get it back in. I will find out tomorrow I guess.

I replaced mine yesterday.

I just unbolted the supercharger and lifted it up about 3" and that gave me easy access to the bolts to remove and replace it.

Did you replace any of the gaskets? Are the allen head bolts on the plenum the only thing that hold the super charger on? What else did you have to do besides take the belt off the supercharger?

I am sure there is a special tool that makes replacing the MAP sensor easy, but I just went to work and got it done.

I am certainly not a pro at this engine platform, but this is how I did it.

Removed the air boxes and surge tanks.

Remove the metal tube the pokes into the supercharger inlet.

Unplugged the MAP and throttle valve.

Remove the fuel rail and injectors.

Undid the bracket for the oil dip stick tube.

Remove the bolts that hold the supercharger to the cylinder heads.

Remove the belt.

Removed that valve thing that has that U hose on the driver's side.

Then I lifted the rear of the supercharger up enough to access the bolts to the MAP and placed a hunk of silicone hose under it to hold it up.

Swapped the MAP and then put all that stuff back on.

I did replace the gaskets for the surge tanks and the supercharger to cylinder head.

Holy S. The dealer only charges 1.1 that is kind of how I knew I could get it to. That is a ton of work. I was able to get a wrench down on that front bolt to get it tight again. Well I hope the map sensor fixed your issue.

If you take off the air boxes and look down on the passenger side of the throttle body with a light you can see it. I can't get you a picture though.

The throttle body does need to come over. It is very simple. I read your not supposed to unplug it though without the star tool to recalibrate it. So I just left it connected and set it to the side. If you have some patience you should be able to get it done.

Dealer book time is only 1.1 hours so it maybe easier to just go pay $150 bucks in labor. I have my old one that is still good. After I did the map sensor, it turns out there was a vacuum leak so I did it for nothing.

Oh well done sir !
You make it sound easy!
I'm sure to tackle the task !
Will take off the air boxes and have a
Look by the throttle valve.
Do you know if our cars hold a MAF sensor ?
Have done a lot of work to my car
And my next job is complete suspension
Lines with shocks.

Your very kind sir !

They do not use a mass air flow sensor. They use the Map sensor and Iat sensor to relay air intake information to the ecu. Just pull those air boxes off, take off the throttle body, and when you get your new map sensor from the dealer you will see what it looks like. It is held on by two bolts.

Hi sir !
You are very knowledgeable
Indeed!
I will tackle this Map sensor job
Hopefully tonight.
If my poor idle still persists
Could well maybe the IAT sensor.
Can you also tell me where it's located ?

I have also been reading about the prop shaft
Flex plate.
What kind of a job is it sir ?

Many thanks once again !

Smile Cam sensor

Hi sir
I replaced the MAP and IAT sensor
Have noticed a change in the drive.
Thank you !
However I still have rough idling
My friend has a Snap On computer
We connected to my car
Now it says
"B6/1 camshaft hall sensor signal implausible"

What could this mean ?
Can it be the cause of my rough idle ?

Many thanks

Cam angle sensor bad???

I do not know what else would cause cam faults in these motors.

I welded a small 3/8 round bar to the socket and then could reach down to remove it. Only removed one air tank. Took a while going 1/4 turn at a time but not to bad.

Smile Idle issues

Hi sir !
Thank you for your reply
To all !
I have done the cam sensor
The old one didn't look good
Seemed burnt a little to me.
However my idle problem still remains !

It's like the motor is misfiring slightly
And when I rev to 1000revs in park
The vibration seems to come from the back of the car
I can feel it from the back of drivers seat
Could it be the EGR valves ?
Maybe the Idle Control valve?
Have cleaned the O2 sensors,
They were dirty !
Car has become more responsive !
Well worth doing with brake cleaner and wire brush.

But the idle vibration which is irratic remains
Any clues ?

Many thanks everyone !

have you checked your transmission and engine mounts?

Do an engine compression test to check the health of the engine.

If you have a cylinder down on compression you will not have a smooth idle.

Smile Idle issue

Hi sir !

Yes engine and transmission mounts
All replaced last few weeks.
Correct me if I'm wrong sir,
But are there 3 engine mounts on this car?
I have done the two mounts by the sides of the motor.

I think I read there maybe a third mount somewhere.

Tomorrow I will replace the diff end flex disc
Might cure the shake when accelerating to 80mph
Or it could be a diff mount?
Also do you know where the idle valve sits ?

there are 3 mounts. 2 engine, i transmission. you say you feel the vibration in the rear of the car. that's where the transmission mount is and could cause this problem. i think you should have the car checked by a knowledgeable mechanic or the dealer instead of throwing parts at it.

Smile Idle issue

Hi Sir !
Yes I agree!
I must do a compression test
Do you know what the exact figures
Should be ?

My wallet is not very happy with me lately
I must eliminate the idle problem.

Fuel filter is new done last week.
There is hesitation during overtake,
Which shudders the car slightly
I'm quite sure it's coming from the back.
I thought my Catalytics were failing?
The pull is not smooth during overtakes.
Seems as if something is choking the engine
Slightly.

Many thanks again sir !

Sometimes its much cheaper and easier to pay a dealer for an hour of diag. As long as you get a good honest tech you should be ok going that route.
