NAPA ABC/PS Pump $289.00 / system rebuild

NAPA ABC/PS Pump $289.00 .
Really ? says it's re manufactured with limited lifetime warranty .

Had a good chance to drive the car Sunday and yes i got the dreaded ABC light ! just the gray one that says ABC visit workshop .
was driving it hard and after that it came on . i do notice a slight wobble on the pump pulley ? not sure if it is bent or what ? will have to pull the belt and pulley and see if there is leaking around the shaft or if there is play in it .
don't have my star system yet to diagnose and check the sensors ( will wait till i have it to run test ) but i am having the thought of rebuilding the entire ABC system / accumulators / rebuild valve blocks / new pump / filters flush and fill .
the hoses look good ( no seeping or sweating ) and the struts are not leaking yet so i will leave them alone for now , i have no leaks anywhere but want to go through the system for preventive maintenance and with the cost of this pump it looks like i could do it for right around a $1000 doing all labor myself .
here is a picture of the pump

If you're not sure then don't do it.

There have been far too many bad experiences with rebuilt pumps. Not sure why, however, most the cost in the labor and fluids, therefore having to do the job a second time would surly not be worth it.

Thumbs up

What are the details on the "limited lifetime warranty"?

If it's only $300... And Napa replaces it for free if it ever fails in the future....Seems like a great deal. Got to really scrutinize the details of the warranty.

warranty looks they will replace it if it ever fails .

https://partimages.genpt.com/partimages/1096704.pdf

also i wounder if the FEBI 08972 fluid at $8.49 a liter would be a good alternative for CHF11s ???

Last time I checked, the FEBI fluid had TOTALLY different specs than CHF 11s. I would stick with CHF 11s.

No.
Even if it were, it's not covered under the warranty.

"This warranty does not apply to an NAPA Power Steering Pump, Rack & Pinion, Gear, Control Valve or Power Cylinder Unit which has been altered, misused, damaged, installed improperly, installed on a vehicle for which it was not designed, installed using the wrong steering fluid (use only recommended Original Equipment Power Steering fluid)"

You want MB Part # Q 1 32 0001.

Throw one of the rebuilt pump on and let us know. I'm definitely curious after seeing this thread. I did not know people rebuilt these. It is alot of labor for the part to fail though.

the labor really doesn't bother me i love working on cars . once i get my star ( and spend a few days in simulation mode before hooking it up to the car ) i will see what kind of pressure the pump is putting out then make the call on the pump . first thing i am going to do is change the accumulators and flush the system . i believe when the accumulators loose there charge the bumps you hit shock the system and is very hard on it .
i just bought this car a week ago and have spent MANY hours studying the ABC system . actuality it is a very simple just very expensive parts ! having an understanding of how the whole thing works helps a lot and i am not afraid it anymore .

With where that thing is located, and how pricey the fluid etc is, regardless if i was doing the labor myself or not, i would rather have a new OEM one. Yeah you could pinch off the lines and only lose a small amount of fluid changing it out but i would put new fluid in the whole system. Will NAPA pay you for a valve block if their pump takes a **** and crap gets into the system, etc? No. Good luck.

no i never did my pump is fine . after all i have read here on rebuilt pumps and listening to the pros and what they have to say about them i think it's worth spending the $$$ for a good OEM one that wont grenade and send shrapnel through the system .

actually valve blocks are pretty much indestructible. if they fail they can be easily and very cheaply rebuilt. the op already has experience with that

the tandem pump is the only part that really suffers from dirt and so far is not easily rebuildable (close tolerance metal gears meshed together i assume- never split one myself and also i have no idea who the original supplier is..)

i believe the pump is a radial piston style pump ? after rebuilding the rear valve block I'm with alx there pretty much indestructible plus there are screens that would catch and major debris from entering it . and something getting to the struts would be almost impossible and with that thought i bet the fluid in them are very dirty because it never gets returned and filtered
kind of changes my mind on using a rebuilt pump .
i have used rebuilt hydraulic pumps on tractors throughout the years with no problems at all .

if they offer you a warranty and it is rebuilt by a reliable source i would have no problem with it . heck I'm even changing my mind on the cheap napa pump and if i could get one of them i would use it .
so far my pump is good and pushing 195 bar

if you want to flush the fluid in the shocks there are bleeder nipples on the top of each one. the procedure is done while the suspension is unloaded (ie all for tires off the ground)
