CL55 New Cannonball Run Record Holder

So the latest coast to coast Cannonball Run record holder did it in a CL55, albiet a modified one. Here is the article quite a facinating read.

I was reading this yesterday online. I wonder if I could do it in my 215? A truly amazing achievement. That is some crazy record but I do not think I would be able to do it. I love my CL but that is a long time to be inside any car.

They said they ruled out the V12s based on fuel economy. Unless they were caning it on the acceleration front constantly (doubtful for saving fuel) I'd have thought a CL500 would have got them even better fuel economy.

E55 AMG
Over three hours less than Richard Rawling's time in a Ferrari. Pretty crazy

Yep. Due to the modifications of the fueling system -- I don't think it was fully sealed, hence the gas smell we experienced and constant CEL.

I have driven a SL500 before and it is woefully slow. We needed 'sufficient passing power' at times.

The performance of a SL500 is similar to your GTI...

Is the fuel economy all that much different on a 600 vs the 55?

2005 SL55 AMG
I just read this on Jalopnik. Truly amazing!

You CL owners should be beaming with pride!

Someone mentioned SL500 upthread and as cool as I think it would have been had they chosen a SL55 to smash the record in the CL seems a better choice with (I would imagine) more cabin and trunk room vs. the SL. The lack of a folding roof may also make the CL55 a little lighter?

Anyway Awesome job and an awesome car

Here is a little food for thought....This was my fuel consumption for the same average in my CL65. ...Maybe the .5 Liter displacement is also worth .5 MPG. regardless of the motor.

CL is a good choice compared to SL if you want that added fuel tank, and a back seat seeing that there was 3 people inside. As for being inside for that long, IDK if I could deal with it, I love my car but after 6 hrs of driving I start getting sick of it and need to stretch my legs. Congrats on beating the record.

The 55 motor is on par with the 65 when it comes to fuel economy. Actually if not passing and accelerating hard the 65 motor is a tad more fuel efficient because you can stay out of the turbos while the blower spins constantly and the engine is always under some boost / requires more fuel.

Nevertheless- awesome write up
