Admitting I haven't searched the manual for this: Exploring my 06 CL55 AMG...aside from manual mode, what are the virtues of convience and "S" mode? "S" for sport? And can traction control be turned off?

"S" stands for summer. Tranny starts in 1st gear.

"W" is for winter. Tranny starts in 2nd gear.

Traction control is always on unless you disable all system (ABS/ESP/BAS) via the easter egg settings.

Search this forum for the procedure we use on the 2001-2005 W215. Not sure it works on the W216.

Comfort mode starts off in second gear and shifts softer than sport mode, at least in a 65 so I think a 55 is probably the same. Manual mode will still up shift, but holds each gear until redline, slightly higher than sport mode.

Turning off traction control with the button on the dash only turns it down, not off. To totally disable traction control put the car I'd Dyno mode.
Dyno mode

1. Insert your key and turn to position 1.

2. Press the trip odometer reset button three (3) times.

3. The first screen you will see on the MFD is the battery voltage in the following format - UB: 12.0 V

4. Press the UP arrow button on the steering wheel.

5. You will now see other information such as Software Version, etc.

6. If you want to put the car into DYNO mode which will disable ESP and BAS, leave the key in position 1 and hit the up arrow until you see the screen that says "ESP Dynamometer Test".

7. At this screen use your + or - steering wheel button to turn this mode ON.

8. You will get some malfunctions due to ESP, BAS, etc. being off, but this is not a problem and they will go away once you disable the DYNO mode.

9. You can start you car now in DYNO mode. It will stay in Dyno mode even if you shut off & restart the car. To get out of Dyno mode simply go back though the procedure but turn it off instead of on. Also, disconnecting the battery for a few minutes will cause the car to default out of Dyno mode.
