A//C replacement & ABC in the way ?

Advice needed ...

A/C compressor ate itself up and needs replacing. My indie claims that the ABC pump is in the way and has to come out (Lots of $$$).

Is this accurate or can it be done without removing the ABC pump ?

Car is 2001 CL55

Thanks in advance,
Kevin

Well, the AC compressor is mounted below the ABC pump, so the latter is indeed in the way.

The MB WIS procedure for the compressor does say to remove the ABC pump first. It also says to lift the engine up 60mm, so it must be difficult.

The coolant pipe has to come out as well.

I don't think you're being misled.

That dang coolant pipe is a pain in the neck. Can't understand why it was designed the way it was -- running right next to the ABC banjo fittings. Not sure it could have been designed in a way that would have preempted the necessity of removing it for an AC pump replacement, but just a few more millimeters of clearance from the ABC banjos would have made my life a lot easier

You can lower the subframe a bit and pull it out the bottom, it's not that bad. experienced tech can get it done in under an hour

Will this work for the 2002 CL500 as well? I'm about taking my car to the shop and would like him to do this rather than removing the ABC pump.

Yes. Lower subframe, unbolt compressor so it drops down a little and you can access the bolts for the lines.
