droning noise from front nearside wheel

Hi I have a w168 A170 that has done just over 105k miles and I've just started getting a reasonably loud droning noise from the front nearside wheel area.
It only occurs when accelerating and the noise starts at about 30mph and increases in volume.
There is a very slight movement when applying pressure to the top/bottom of wheel, but its not obviously loose (which I've had with other wheel bearing problems on other cars).
The gaters on the drive shaft are all sound so its not obviously a lubrication problem. No noises when going on full lock which I think eliminates the drive shaft.
Therefore I'm slightly confused about what it could be. Hopefully its not the gearbox - the noise certainly appears to be nearer the wheel/driveshaft than the gearbox/centre of the car.
Any suggestions? I've seen the MB list of specialist tools that are required to change the bearing/driveshaft and theres quite a few - are these necessary?
