Differences between XENON HID Headlights and Projector Headlights (FROM EBAY)
Hey,
I am looking for some new headlights and I was originally going to purchase the Projector Headlights from eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/98-02...3A1|240%3A1318). However, recently XENON HID have been posted on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/98-03...3A1|240%3A1318). So which one is better. I went to get the best headlights; due to the fact at 70 mph + I am over running my headlights. Also do I have to purchase an HID kit with the projector headlights?
Thanks
Steve

Here is your problem. Both sets do not utilize a HID projector assembly, these headlights utilize halogen projector assemblies.
In the second auction, the seller has installed HID burners into the headlights already, that is all.
Neither will provide the correct light pattern or cut-off when used with HID burners.
The best solution would be to either use factory HID headlights or retro-fit actual HID projectors into these aftermarket headlights and then install a HID burner.

get the ones in the first link n then get a separate HID kit....the only diff is the style of the projectors..the 2nd ones have the "cheesegrater" look and already come with the HID kit....an 8000k at that which is too blue for my taste......id suggest the first ones with a 6000k HID kit..

get the headlights from the first auction, def do not get the other ones with the hids already, those look so bad in person. The projector lights also give good light but nothing is like factory. If you want to retro fit the original MB projectors and all that then be ready to spend a fortune.

To give you some idea of what is involved, look at my retro HID project for my 500e (scroll down a little past half way to find the install)

Since these aftermarket headlights already have projectors in them, it would be a much easier job then what I went through.

Some people want to retain the OEM HID on the factory headlights, to sell them, when they replace them with the new headlights this means they either use the halogen bulbs they come with or retrofit an HID kit onto the new headlights, like I did. As 2PHAST mentions putting HID bulbs in these headlights, which are not designed for HID, create a significantly different light output and cut line. I have had to point down my headlights as to not blind oncoming traffic, but the cut line to the right goes up at a 45 degree angle indefinitely meaning you light up all the road signs on the right side of the road.
I have been keeping my eye open for a real HID projector assemby so to create a proper cut line.

Euro headlights whether they be halogen or HID, will have a sharper rise, specifically for illuminating the road side signs and any cars parked on the shoulder as well. This is more agressive than DOT spec lights.

I too like the factory xenon look of the light - I'm running 6000k as well, 8000k is too blue for me.
But, I want the new look of the lens covers.
Someone needs to make that for oem xenon setups!
My factory lens are just starting to gte a bit blurry/frosted
