Flashing Fuel Light

Hi everyone, I am new to the club, just purchased a 2002 CLK 430, convertible. Finally took the plunge, have to come to realize that these machines are very delicate, especially after reading this site. Anyway love the car, here is my problem.

My fuel gauge light flashes even when my tank is full, anyone have this issue & if so is it fixable without going to dealer?

Is the fuel cap all the way on? The light flashing is indicating an issue with the pruge system, and blinks to let the driver know to check and make sure the cap is on tight before setting a check engine light. Check the cap and make sure its on right and that the tangs line up properly on the cap (sometimes they can not line up properly, one is plastic the other is metal).

take off the fuel cap and clean the seal and the fuel neck where the cap sits on with a towel and close it back up and should be good to go. if that didnt solve the issue then its your evap canister on the passenger side rear fender liner or the vap or release valve on the driver side rear fender liner(its a white round small box. more than likely it is the fuel cap.

Some while ago I was having same problem. Cap would sometimes seal, sometimes not seal. Gas cap felt to my hand as though it was binding as I turned it into place--offered a lot of resistance.

I massaged in a small bit of lithium grease onto the rubber seal on the cap, and the cap went on much, much more easily, and always sealed. The grease lasts a long time, about a year.

I don't think you'll find they're delicate. They have some complexity though and build qulaity could be a bit hit and miss. Major mechanical problems don't seem at all common.
