99' CLK 320 Coupe
Question What does the W/S stand for? Oh and ASR?

First of all, unlike many of you guys I bought my car from a Used Euro Cars place and my car didn't come with an owner's manual. I have a 99 CLK 320 Coupe. And would like to know the following:

W/S switch next to the shifter. What does it mean and what does it do exactly or best as possible explain how I can benefit from it.

ASR switch near Shifter. As about the only thing I know about this is that it lights up an exclamation point triangle on the console!

I know, total noob. But help me with these so I won't be one. Thanks in advance.

The W/S switch is to toggle between Winter and Summer driving mode.

The ASR switch was replaced by ESP (electonic skid protection?) in the newer models. Just leave this one on.

W/S = Winter or Summer transmission modes. Winter starts out in second and shifts sooner. Also, reverse is a higher gear.

ASR = Automatic Skid Reduction/Automatic Slip Regulation (traction control) is different than ESP which is Electronic Stability Program and controls directional stability. They are 2 different items that compliment each other. ASR is standard on all cars and ESP is added on high end models.

Yeah, leave it on.

Is there any reason you wouldn't want to leave the W/S setting to Winter all the time? I.e., is it bad for the transmission or something?

You can leave it on Winter all the time.......jus tpull up next to me at a red light and watch me smoke you hahaha. It will just slow you down.

My wife drove my cat for a while and when I got back in I noticed it shifted all weird and it was much slower than I thought it used to be.....well after about 2 weeks of slow driving I figured out that she had hit the button by accident. I never thought to look at it since I don't touch it. Anywho I leave it on S eveni n the winter, if it is that bad out I need to start out in 2nd I'll just drive our ML or 4x4 truck.

Does Winter mode wastes less gas than Sport/Summer mode? I think I've noticed a difference.

Also thanks for the 411. I was so in da dark.

Thanks, the only reason I asked was because I started to notice a little hesitation in the transition between 1st and 2nd gears. I figured by starting in 2nd I could avoid this. When I tried it in Winter mode this morning, though, I noticed it takes a little more "effort" to build up speed, although the shifting was pretty smooth.

CLK 230 Kompressor
I use S for normal driving in the dry.
I use W for traffic jams, car parks, and wet roads.
Driving slow in W or 2nd gear is a lot smoother, and the transmission doesn't get too busy and jerky shifting between 1st and 2nd when you speed up or slow down frequently.
The throtle response is a bit sluggish in 2nd gear and it makes for smoother driving at crawling speeds.

Yes it burns less gas because your going in lower gears. Unless you like to race and burn gas it so then the s to save gas. To save gas then the w. I hope answered your question.
