Serndipity, thanks for the kind referral.
The W208 CLK convertibles have seven hydraulic cylinders in the system, as shown in the location diagram below. Two of them are aluminum latching cylinders. Those typically fail first, and their R&R (removal and re-installation) has been thoroughly covered in the first DIY created by forum member 'joetwa': http://www.tophydraulicsinc.com/W208...eplacement.pdf
We have recently added another, very detailed DIY for W208 CLK Cabriolets, and it deals specifically with the removal and installation of the five black steel cylinders p/n A 208 800 00 72 (2x main lift cylinders which lift the whole top), p/n A 208 800 01 72 (2x fabric bow cylinders which lift the rear glass section), and A 208 800 02 72 (1x case cover lift cylinder which lifts the storage cover). This is the DIY that you have already (correctly) quoted for bbnotman's leak from one of his black steel cylinders: http://www.tophydraulicsinc.com/w208removalguide.pdf.
We offer straight rebuild & upgrade service (where folks send in their cylinders first, then we rebuild them, then we ship them back), and we offer core exchange (where we ship cylinders from our inventory first, you install them, and then you send back your old cylinders for core credit).
The most popular options are for folks to order the two locking cylinders A1298001672 and A1298000072 already mounted in their lock assemblies (A1247700426 and A1247500684/A2087500984) for core exchange:
http://www.tophydraulicsinc.com/en/w...-assembly.html for model years '98-'00 and
http://www.tophydraulicsinc.com/en/w...-assembly.html for model years '01-'03.
Our second most popular option is core exchange of the full set of seven cylinders (for the price of five): http://www.tophydraulicsinc.com/en/m...-set-w208.html.
While wishful thinking makes many CLK owners try to replace only one cylinder at a time and hope for the best, we find that it is clearly most economical and least aggravating to have all cylinders dealt with in on shot. At the very least, CLK owners should deal with the two locking cylinders at the same time, and they may get a few more years out of the five black steel cylinders if they are lucky. Our rebuilds are indeed upgrades, which have much longer service life than new OEM parts under the same conditions, for a fraction of what you would pay for brand new OEM (Mercedes) parts.
