Gas gauge reading backwards

Gas gauge reading backwards
2000 - CLK430
I have been working on this car for a few weeks and it would not start, it felt like it ran out of gas but the gauge was showing full. When I went to the fuel rail I had no fuel only air so I added gas and it started. I then filled up the tank and it shows "empty" with the low light on.
As I use gas the gauge now goes in the opposite direction empty=FULL.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Very common issue. Sounds like your fuel sending unit is giving you issues.
I have had this issue a number of times and managed to resovle it by using fuel injection cleaner, over a few days the fuel level will start to behave again.

Injector cleaner in system
I have been running injector cleaner because the car sat for so long but it doesn't appear to make any difference. I'm going to try following the wiring to see if there is a bad connection.

How long have you been using the cleaner? as it can take many days or weeks to work. Also some brands do not seem to work as well as others mate.

It won't hurt to wait to see if it works I'm using Chevron ProGuard fuel injector cleaner right now. I may take some time as I don't use drive this car very much. This is the first tank full of gas the car has seen in about a year, the car was sitting that long with only about 2 liters of fuel in the tank at best.
