What is that black strip at bottom of early mercedes 320 clk ?

What is that black painted strip at bottom of early mercedes 320 clk ?

Im looking at buying a one owner always garaged 1999 320 CLK with 49k original miles for $5000

I have only seen the car in pics and noticed this black strip around the bottom of the car. In looking at many pics online it does appear over and over so i think it must have been applied at the factory.

Does anyone know what this is?

1998 CLK320 & 2009 ML350
Rocker panels and all the way around is a vinyl type material, not metal like on most cars.
