Installing new shifter assembly (202-267-0824)

I'm on the verge of making a decision to purchase a new shifter assembly for my 2000 CLK320 and installing it myself, and there is one lingering question in my mind before I pull the trigger.

Is there any programming or electronic initialization required in order for the new shifter to "pair" with my car once it's been physically installed. I was just talking to a local mechanic and he said that would indeed be a necessary part of the install if he were to do it. Sounded to me like he was saying some specialized computer equipment (he said the word "laptop") would be required to initialize the shifter and pair it with my car's VIN before it would work. Anyone know if that's accurate? The part number is 202-267-0824.

According to someone in the parts department of a local M-B dealership, a "simple flash will be needed just to let the shifter know it's in the car" once it's been physically installed.

Has anyone out there ever done this install as a DIY project? I can get the part for a little under $500, and then I guess I'd need to get the "simple flash" done at a local M-B shop. Does that sound like a good plan? Anything I might be missing?
