Lamp Defective Warning after Headlight Replacement

Hello everyone,
2001-CLK430-Cabriolet with Sport Package
after multiple failed attempts at trying to clean my headlight covers with all of the phony products on the market, i decided to replace the entire assembly. I opted to replace the headlights with regular Halogen vs. spending all the extra $ on the xenon, which was the original equipment in the car.

I'm now receiving a "lamp defective" warning on the dash and am thinking that perhaps the car doesn't like the switch to halogen? Note - the transition to halogen has left a plug (from the car) with no matching receptacle on the lamp. So not sure if this is causing the problem? Any help here would be much appreciated! Thank you!
