1999 CLK320 ENGINE CUTTING OUT WHEN AT STOP LIGHT...JERKY RE-START
Hey guys,
have an issue here...
My CLK320 has pretty much been babied. 170K miles.
A few days ago, when coming to a stop, the engine cut out completely. I had to re-start by turning the key again.
It seems to have gotten worse, as after it goes out and I try to restart...it is jerky/lurchy, makes a "chunka chunka chunka" sound after it has been re-started.
Sounds a bit rough when driving...
Repairman said it "probably" needs a complete transmission re-build for $3600...but this does not "feel" like transmission...
Would a bad CPS cause this?
Thoughts or ideas?
TIA
Mike

Transmission??? I don't think so! The 726 tranny is very tuff, one of mine has 437k, and still shifts well.
Is the check engine lamp on? You should have the car scanned. This may have to be done at an import shop as the scanners at FLAPs don't always scan MBs. I tryed a few cheap scanners, and only when a friend plugged in his $5000 snap on scanner did codes come up.
The prob could be fuel pressure regulator, leaking vacuum hose, who knows... But the tranny...
Speaking of trannys, you should invest in a $15 trans dipstick from eBay. Pry off the locked dipstick tube cap and see what your tranny oil looks like. Mine was black. 2 complete dumps and a fill of valvoline max life and all is much redder
