glove box broken, won't stay closed
my glove box door was jammed closed one day. Using the handle wouldnt activate the hook that keeps the door closed so I had to pull it open with force. Now that tiny hook inside that holds the door closed is broken. Is there anyway to fix this? I tried getting to the hook in the glove box door so I can replace it by removing the glove box handle and peeling back the leather but I dont see a way to get to it

I found out I cant just replace that one piece and need a whole new glove box door. the dealer's price was $389 but they said they would get me one for $311. the cheapest place I found was parts.com and it was $218.....can anyone find a better price for me?

Not worth starting a thread, just posting in case anyone has the same stupid problem as me. I could not get the glove box to stay shut all of a sudden. As far as I could tell the latch was working correctly and would clip down and release as it should (the whole design sucks). Anyway my problem was simply that the clip with the metal bar (on the dash) was pushed back ever so slightly into the dash that it didn't press the latch down far enough for it to click. I levered it carefully out with a screwdriver.

Those website mb parts places seem to have varying amounts of savings, so be sure to cross check pricing amongst a few of your fav.
For ex.... Just because you found one part lowest at parts dot com does not mean you won't come across a high priced item. This happened to me when I was doing my facelift bumper. Gl

I just purchased a used CLK500 with a similar glove box issue. The Seller said it would stay closed but sometimes you had to slam it. And, it did work that way when I looked at the car. The glove box was shut when he delivered the car. The first time I opened it, I could not get it to stay shut. I need help! It looks like the catch (dash side) is pushed into the dash, and it seems that the latch does not have any "hook" left on the end, so I don't see how it could possibly work.
I cannot get the catch with the metal bar (on the dash) to stay out of the dash where the latch can touch it. Any slight push and it falls back into the dash. I cannot see how to get to it unless I need to remove the CD player. I went to the dealer and he wanted to sell me a light switch because their diagram showed the light switch in the center of the glove box. Anyway, I wired it shut for now, but any help is appreciated!

Yes, you will need to remove the CD changer but that is very easy - there is one screw holding it in place. It's on the right front corner. Remove that and the CDC pivots out, with a few wires to unplug.
These may help for getting to the strike:

Thank you! That helps me a lot. I tried getting that screw out, and my screwdriver is just too long to fit in there. While I was looking and feeling, I found another further back, so it seems like mine has two?
I'm going to cut the top half of the torx handle down to fit.
Thanks again for the help and the pictures!

Or buy a set of Torx bits. I used a bit in a "Skewdriver" to get to mine:

Alright, I got the torx screwdriver and removed the screws, but I wasn't able to get the CD player to move from it's left side attachment. So, I started thinking outside the box...yes, pun intended!
I bought some High strength SURPLUS NEODYMIUM MAGNETS from K&J Magnetics online (ZB8@$1.78 plus shipping) and epoxied one to the upper left side on dash where the glove box door closes, and made a custom metal plate (1" x 1/2" x 1/8" thick) on the door to mate to it. With a loose magnet in between, it latches up and stays shut as if it was new. When you open the door, all you see is the nickel plated block magnet, and it does not look bad at all.
No outrageous money paid the dealer, either and that was priceless!!

glovebox fixed
After about 8 months I decided to try the magnet trick. But then I was reading other posts about the hinge that the lid grabs onto and how people manipulate it. Mine doesn't have screws and it didn't look like it could move. I put a mini superbar under it and nudged it forward. Glove box hinges now! A new glovebox would not have helped. Hope someone else benefits from this.

I'll post a picture once I get out of here (work). I'll try to describe it better.
There's the 'rod' that the latch grabs onto. The rod is on the box itself, the latch is on the lid. When you push it close the latch hugs the rod and closes around it. My rod piece was pushed in slightly...just enough that the latch couldn't catch it. Visually the rod looks set in place and not meant to move. I took the small superbar and carefully forced it forward. To my amazement it moved. Mine does not have screws holding it in as some people describe. After I nudged it forward a bit the latch caught. I had taken it to several mechanics and they all said my latch was broken and I needs a new lid...wrong! The new lid would not have caught the rod either. I'll post pic.

bar
I wedged it forward. It's in its 'hole' extremely tight. I didn't think it would move and it took a lot of pressure. I don't think anything holds it in place except for the fact that it's a tight fit. Glove box has been operating normally for about 2 weeks now.

Cool. Yeh I was trying to figure out something to slip behind it so it stays forward but if you're saying with enough pressure it stays forward, I'll give it a try. Just wouldn't want to break that thing off. That would suck.
