Remove end cap from axle?

Is it possible to remove the end cap from the front axle on a CLK500?
I have tried spacers from 3 different companies and none of them fit even though they all swear they are for the front axle of a 2005 CLK (I tried two custom shop and H&R). All 3 sets have hit the list of the cap on axle so I am wondering if this is something I can remove.

See attached image. Can I remove the silver cap with the blue paint?
If so, does it just pop off? screw off? any tricks?

Thanks,

Brian

Yes, you can remove that cap it but why do that when you can just get the right spacer for ONLY the front. The front spacer will have a long cap that would cover that cap but some still require to remove the stock cap.

H&R has specific part #'s for front and rear spacers. Make sure you have the correct part #. What size H&R's are you trying to install? I have 10mm front and rear and didn't have a problem.

I don't really want to take the cap off, but I can't find a spacer that will fit over the cap. The spacers I currently have in hand are the H&R 30556659 that they say are for the FRONT of a 2005 CLK on their web, and over the phone with H&R. However when I try to put it on it gets stuck. The main spacer fits on fine, but there is a slight taper from the 66.5mm center bore in to the thin metal protuding lip, and it is this thin lip that is slightly less than 66.5 that gets stuck on the cap.

Dynaomite05, I have heard good things about H&R and figured I had found my solution but these sure don't seem to fit.

I am thinking if I can get the cap off to get the spacer on, I can put it back on after the install.

Thanks for the replies.

Klinh, you are correct. I have never seen spacers like that. Pretty slick.
Where did you find those?
I just checked the Tuner Shop site and just saw the standard System 2 spacers. Didn't see the ones you had a posted a picture of (2_d). Any chance you have a link I could order from?

I got the pic from Ebay but I recommended H&R brand. If you do order it from H&R, read the side NOTE that specified for front spacer only.
