I didn't need to replace mine yet and so I don't know where it is on the Clk500. But I did replaced one on my Clk430 and it on the rear passenger side above the suspension. You won't see the fuel filter until you remove the black plastic cover. So it might be hidden on the Clk500 or it might be in the gas tank. Dyno would be able to help you with a pic diagram.

not sure the 03 or 04 but the 05 CLK500 is in the tank ( i am 100% sure).

That's a 4 cylinders. How can it be similar with the V8? I think it in the tank because the Clk500 engine has the "returnless" fuel system.

Ok...i googled it and got a picture of the fuel filter. Definitely 100% is in the gas tank based on the pic. If it were a cansiter, then it would be mount inline like on the Clk 430.

brought the car to the dealer one time ( got my interior detail) and was planning to replace the fuel filter too but they wanted $600 i asked why they said because its in the tank so i was like "NVM" lol

You pretty much have to remove the rear seat for access to the fuel tank pump.

lol i went to a dealership and they said the fuel filter has never ever been installed on the car lol

Do you mean never replaced?

My guess is it is big enough that they don't plan on it ever being replaced.

OTOH I had a 68 Ford that all it had for a filter was a screen right before the carb. I guess they though anything smaller was going through the engine. The mechanic pun an aftermarket in line filter in it after he cleaned out the screen (which was starving the engine for gas).

You really think they went into the tank and didn't find one? That part looked a little integrated and necessary to be just flat left off.

I've seen used cars that have had them removed and not replaced but I'd be shocked if a factory actually forgot to put on on. Stranger things have happened though.

So.... has anyone tried replacing fuel filter?
I hit 60k and I am supposed to get it replaced, but it costs a lotta money due to long hours of labor so my mechanic said screw it for now and told me to come back when I have money.



Who actually got this thing replaced and how much did it cost?
And, has anyone not get this replaced ? I'd like to know what would happen if I don't get this replaced for another 3 years. Btw.... I have 2003 CLK500.
I think the fuel filter filters bad particles from gasoline you put at a gas station.
I put Chevron Fuel System Cleaner everytime I get engine oil changed (every 5k miles). I hope this is enough that I don't have to get the fuel filter replaced.

Older models have the filter outboard at the rear of the tank. late 2005 onwards NON AMG cars started placing it in the one fuel level sensor in the tank. Fuel sensors & pump are under 2 round plates under the rear seat. AMG vehicles had it in the tank earlier. In tank units require replacement less often due to capacity.

Glyn, would you mind giving the code for the internal thing that should be replaced? I bought an old filter, seems like they couldnt understand what was going on with my car. One said there is no filter, indie couldnt find the location and handed me the old filter.
I am thinking of DIY if the part is not very expensive. My car is over 100K miles now.

I have a 2006 CLK 500 convertible (W209). Very confused about the fuel filter. I bought a new one 2 years ago (13k miles) when I acquired the vehicle, but due to my confusion I never put it in. Since I have some 'extra' time I'd like to tackle this.

The filter I purchased is 002-477-300-1, and is an external filter. That is the part# that every site I've looked at shows.

I changed my differential fluid yesterday and while I was in that area, I spent a little time looking for the fuel filter and could not find it. Is it perhaps underneath the long, black mud protector thingie?

I have 143K miles on my 2008 CLK350 and the fuel filter has NEVER been replaced. I believe that I have read on another thread that due to high cost the advice was not to replace until you start having issues.

I'm antsy. I am very big on preventive maintenance. I enjoy working on my car. I have extra time on my hands. So, instead of polishing the bolts on my intake manifold, I'd rather change the fuel filter

If I don't get a definitive answer on the 2006 CLK500, I may take off that plastic cover next weekend to take a peek.

Also, oftentimes the "high cost" is due to the labor component. I've done LOTS of stuff on my cars over the years that would've cost me a small fortune to have someone else do it! Besides, when I do it myself I KNOW it was done right (errrrr ... HOPE it was done right).
