CLK550 Wheel Offset
I am looking at getting a new set of wheels to upgrade my stock 2007 CLK550 17 inch ones.
I was looking at going to 18 inch AMG Replicas. Avoiding 19 because of the large number of potholes in Pittsburgh.
What offset are the OEM wheels? I am assuming an 18 inch 35mm offset wheel will work just fine.
Is 8.5 / 9.5 inch staggered too wide? For some reason I am thinking the OEM ones are 7.5 / 8.5 if I recall correctly from memory.
I do NOT want to use spacers.

I have read the entire wheels and tires sticky, but thought I'd put this here since traffic in that sticky is light.

+35 means the wheel actually has 2mm less clearance because it's only 35mm out from the hub mount compared to the stock 37mm of clearance. you could use spacers in the front if you dont have enough brake clearance, but be careful that you have enough steering clearance.

Man, learning this offest stuff before deciding on wheels is giving me a headache. You say that ET 35 will hit the brakes on a 550. I've seen that in other posts as well. Why? The stock wheels on a 550 are ET37, so 35 is theoretically 2mm more clearance, not less. What am I missing?

I get that you have to allow for wider wheels to clear struts, but just on the issue of brake clearance wouldn't 35 be btter than 37? Wes's comment was about brakes, which is what confused me. o

I think you may have this backwords. At least I hope you do or I really need to start over.

Actually, this raises an interesting question. Offset tells you everything you need to know about the relationship between the mounting surface and the rim, but dues it really tell you anything about brake clearance? Isn't that governed more by the design of the spokes? I suppose you could have a design where an ET 35 could clear a caliper the size of a watermelon and another design that could clear nothing. Am I right or can one assume that if one 35ET clears they will all clear?
