Steering wheel clicking...only when turning left

A hopefully small issue has developed with my 07 CLK550.

When turning the wheel to the left, there is a faint clicking noise coming from somewhere inside the car (presumably inside the steering column).

It only happens when turning left, not right. It occurs regardless of the "starting angle" of the wheel. For example, I can be at full right lock, then release the wheel, and it will click.

It also only happens if I turn the wheel fairly quickly and at least through ~90 deg of rotation. A slow turn doesn't manifest.

Actual steering control appears to be unaffected.

Quite the mystery.

I agree. Doesn't take much for them to start having a little creak or tick.

It's probably the "clockspring", which is the part inside the steering wheel that manages the electrical wiring for the airbag and control buttons.

There is a clock spring lube which came out for a R171 recall. Basically the same thing.

You have to remove the steering airbag to get to the clockspring, the you can lubricate it.

I'm having the same problem and I am wondering if you guys can please post some pictures/WIS diagrams as to where exactly to insert the lube.

I took the steering wheel off this weekend and I am very familiar with what's underneath it (airbag, steering angle sensor, etc..). The clicking sound cannot be reproduced with the airbag/steering wheel removed.

Thank you in advance.
