M272 #391424 - it is in the range for potential failure.

Thank you Rudney. I checked the code today and it shows as P0022. After I removed the dirt around the magnets, CEL is off or number of engine start/stop made it go away. I am taking it to dealer this weekend.

P0022 = DTC 0276, which is a camshaft sensor magnet failure. You need to replace them. All four are about $100 and if you can, say, change spark plugs yourself, you can change these.

[QUOTE=Rudeney;5575218]4JGCB65EX8A072369 has M272 engine #769342, which is beyond the range for balance shaft problems (and also beyond the range for cam sensor magnet problems).

I can't figure out if my engine is included in the range - 272 960 30 513336?

The last 7 digits is the engine serial number - yours is "0513336" which is beyond the problem range, which ran through "0468993" for the M272 V6 and "0088611" for the M273 V8.

Another MY2008 - those are beyond the range. Only through MY2007 do you need to worry. Yours is M272 #682270.

That's a very early one! M272 engine #029372 (delivered December 2004!) Unfortunately, it is within the range for potential balance shaft failure.

Looking to buy a use 2008 e350 wagon, and fortunately did some research and found about about this common issue with the m272 engine.

Would you be so kind to check WDBUH87X08B320896?

Thank you,

No worries with a MY2008. MY2007 is the only ones we need to check - any M272/M273 up through MY2006 will be "in the affected range", and MY2008 or later is fine. The first half ot eh MY2007 builds re in the range, but the last half are not.

Just to make sure, that VIN has M2723 #918432, which is well beyond the range.

It's a MY2006, so yes, its engine will be "in the range" for potential balance shaft issues. As for the transmission, is it periodically going into limp mode? if so, then it's likely a bad turbine speed sensor, which will need to be replaced, along with the conductor plate, by the dealer.

Thanks for the response and yes it goes on to a limp mode. It has 65k miles and I never had a transmission service. It was suggested to me to start by doing this first and will take it from there. It will be done today!

Do you often hear clicking noises after shifting into D or R? If so, it's the turbine speed sensor. But if you have never had the fluid and filter changed, you should do that, as it is prescribed at 39K miles. Then again, if you have the speed sensor fixed, fluid and filter will get changed.

Oh, and maybe we need to create a new thread for this since it's not related to the balance shaft issue.

All MY2006 V6 and V8 MBZ's (except AMGs and "500" models which used the older M113 engine) will be in the range for potential balance shaft failure. Including this one. The only time you need a VIN check is with MY2007 - the problem was identified and resolved halfway through production of that model year.
