Thanks Rodney. i figured that was the case. I first received code 1200, changed all 4 magnets. My mechanic said that this may or may not rectify the issue. He told me to drive it and see what happens. Few weeks later, code 1208. He said its definitely the shaft issue. Luckily for me, he is a retired Mercedes mechanic with 35 years under his belt with his own shop. He's fixing my car for only $2200. Not too bad I suppose.

That's a bargain! The parts alone are close to $1000. Labor for a skilled mechanic with the right tools is probably at least two days. Book rate is 25 hours , I believe.

I was planning to purchase a 2007 R350 from an independent dealer, but now have seen that the engine is in the affected range for the balance shaft issue. Should I:
a. Run away from this deal?
b. Go to a local MB dealer to see if they have record of repair or codes for the vehicle? I don't currently have the vehicle, but I do have the VIN and Engine # - do they have a database that shows all history of codes and service on this vehicle by any MB dealer?
c. Go ahead and purchase assuming the repair will be covered by MB on goodwill (I'm not going to do this, but thought I would include it for fun.)
d. do something else?

2005 SLK 350 balance shaft issue question
I have a SLK 350 with 112000 miles, vin WDBWK56F45F049590, engine code 272 963 30 025842. it doesn't show any malfunctions on the display but I haven't read out the codes. Can you tell me if its in the range of engines that have a possible balance shaft issue? is there a finite range of numbers like 1 to 30000 or the like?
Thanks

VIN Check
Hey Rodney. Here's the scoop for me.
2007 C280, 110K miles.
VIN: WDBRF92H77F875529
Have had CEL on & off over the past couple years. Good news is the codes are 0012, 0015, 0022, 0025 so not the dreaded 0016. Bad news is that it is coming on more frequent now and firing all four codes at once. I just purchased the replacement magnets and am hoping after install will go away...but can you check the VIN and see if I am in the good/bad range? Hoping with 110K have made it past the issue regardless, but living in NY will not pass inspection if I cannot get the codes to stay clear.
Thanks!
Nat

Someone help!
Hey guys, so my car has been showing the CEL lately, here's what happened.
2008 C300
VIN: WDDGF54X18F066430
I brought the car to the mechanic after reading P0015 and P0015(pd) from my personal code reader. He told me that he needed to replace all four cam sensors in order to clear the code.
After 4 hours, I picked up the car, and he said "drive it about 80 miles before taking it to the smog check station, otherwise you won't pass." After a few more hours, the CEL came back on, and I brought the car back to my mechanic the next day.
He told me the code that his STAR system was reading was "0060," and that he'd replace the sensor it was assigned to, in case it was a faulty part. He told me if the check engine comes back on again, that I would probably have to replace the whole cam shaft. A few hours later, the CEL came back on again, and I attached my code reader, and it threw out P0015 and P0015(pd) once more. Does this mean I actually have to get the whole cam shaft replaced?
My mechanic told me I could bring the car back to him if the CEL was on, and get a refund. I'm thinking about getting a second opinion.
