I guess it could, but you'd need to compare it to an engine run the same way, same miles, and without balance shaft failure. Honestly, I would not worry about it. The number of engines ailing doesn't even show as a blip on the car review sites and magazines.

Hello everyone I am new to this forum, I have placed a deposit on a 2007 CLK 550 convertible with 74k and then found this forum. After doing some searching I came across this issue and also the 7 speed transmission issue. If someone could help me determine if I need to be concerned about either of these issues I would really appreciate it . My Vin. WDBTK72F97T085431

That has M273 engine #135760 - it's beyond the range for "balance shaft" failure, but it may still have transmission issues withe the conductor plate. There's no serial number range for that, but generally, many cars before MY2008 were more prone to failure.

CLK 500
Engine Serial Number

Hi,

I am thinking about purchasing a CLK 500 with VIN WDBTK75JX6F171649. Can someone check the VIN to see if this is within the range of vehicles affected (or direct me to a site that can determine the serial number)? Judging from the class action lawsuit, I believe this car will fall out of the 10-year range to have the repair completed complimentary.

Thanks!

Rodney, would you be so kind as to check out the vin on a vehicle I'm looking to purchase?

VIN: 4JGBB86E26A127447

2006 ML350

It's got 168k on it so logically thinking it would of failed by now I would think. The current owner has never had a problem with check lights and has had it for about 3 years and bought it right around 130k

I appreciate any advice you have and thank you for checking out the vin!

No need to check the VIN - ALL MY2006 vehicles with the M272 (xx230, xx280 xx300, xx350) of M273 (xx450, xx550) engines will be "in the range". Only MY2007's need checking by VIN.

Some people suggest that the higher the mileage, the less likely premature failure will occur. Others suggest that "all" of these engines have defective parts, it's just a matter of "how early" they fail. Anything before 300K miles is "early" since that's the expected lifespan of a timing chain and its sprockets.

That's a MY2006 - all MY2006's will have an engine in the range for potential balance shaft failure. Onyl MY2007 is split and needs checking by VIN/engine serial #.

2009 CLK550

Hi Rudeney,

I am planning on buying a CLK550. Would like to know if 2009 model also had the same balance shaft and transmission issues as the 2007 and 2008.

Is there anything in particular that goes wrong with the 2009 CLK550 that I need to watch out for ?

Thanks in advance

No the balance shaft issue was discovered and resolved during the MY2007 build, so MY2008 and later are all fine. By MY2009, the last year for the W209, most all the bugs were worked out and owners report few problems, really none of them major. Just follow the MBZ published maintenance schedules, and add in a transmission fluid and filter change (with torque converter drain) every 40K miles (MBZ only calls for one at 39K).

Hi

Can you check the following VIN number for me. If the car is not in the range for balance shaft issue could it still have the defective camshaft solenoids issue

WDDGF56X28F045583

no need to check - that's a MY2008. Balance shaft only needs to be checked for MY2007's - before that, all M272/M273 engines are affected. After that, none are.

That's a MY2006 - all MY2006's are "in the range". We only need to check MY2007.

MY2008 is no worries for balance shaft issues - that was resolved halfway through MY2007. P0025 = DTC 0064 which is a symptom of "Scenario 2". You just need to replace the camshaft adjuster solenoids (a.k.a. cam magnets). Parts are about $100 for all four and it's a 2-4 hour DIY job, if you are so inclined.

Hi Rodney,
Thank you for the quick reply, I was worried even though I have a MY2008 because the delivery date was 7/16/2007.

Delivery date: 16 07 2007
Engine no.:

Delivery date means nothing - it's about the model year in this case. And as you can see, your engine is well beyond the problem range (it ended with 272xxx 30 468993.
