...and I mean the whole trim piece with the gear indicator and "chrome" trim. There's far less of a CLICK when snap it back into place (not much of a snap). Could clips have broken off? Are they replaceable?

Please refer to the link below. The same happened to me and with the help of this forum, I replaced mine 2 years ago.
Make sure you read the instructions in the link, the installation is not obvious.

Common on many Merc models. Replace it!

I did pay for it but it was not expensive. Yes, I lucked out, many thanks to Wes.

I did have instructions how to replace it but somehow I cannot find it anymore. Maybe Wes sent it to me in private message. I checked my messages but it did not go back that far back.

The main point is to remove the shifter knob and boot first.

NO LONGER ACTIVE
There are four plastic tabs underneath the chrome trim ring. They break (either completely or just the rear "wing" on the clip). I fixed mine on he CLK and C240 by putting a screw horizontally through the surround boot so that it lodges under the wood panel. I had to do this with the wood panel removed from the console. It also means that now the chrome surround cannot be removed from the wood panel, but that's no problem. If I ever need to work in the center console, I still have enough slack in the wiring to remove the wood panel first, then disconnect the wiring.

anyone know the actual name of the part? parts.com doesn't find "shifter base plate" or "shifter surround" (also checked with "shift" instead of "shifter")

Here's the part you need:

http://www.parts.com/parts/index.cfm...earch&siteid=2

But honestly, I'd do what I did and just "rig" it with screws:

Thanks Glyn and Rodney; parts.com was driving me mental, showing everything BUT what I'm looking for:

and I'm usually a fan of MacGyver-like solutions like yours Rodney, but I am so tired of yanking in that walnut piece to get it off, then pounding on it to get it back on. Like a tech once said to me, "these cars go together hard!" I've had the trim in and out so many times, tweaking my iPod and GPS setups, my upper shift row trim never goes in flush on both ends.

Yeah, that is an elusive part. I even had a bit of a challenge finding the part number in EPC. Really, the screws aren't that bad to deal with. I also remove my console trim occasionally to tweak the position of my Escort radar detector remote mute button. It's not that hard to remove. I have set of plastic wedges I use to pry on the wood panel. Putting it back in place does take a nice "punch".

I'm hoping what they have in stock is the new improved one. With US parts turnover it is likely.

I'm just getting around to looking up that part; I'm launching an internet radio station* and between that, work and storm cleanup I'm tapped.
* I learned the hard way not to link my non-commercial enterprises here but I'll PM anyone interested; indie pop and rock from all over the world. catchy stuff you likely don't know.

y'know Rodney, it occurs to me that you CAN remove that without removing the walnut piece.....can't you disengage the leather boot to expose those screws?

duh! on second viewing I see that your "MacGuyver" repair has the screws going thru the leather boot!

I'm guessing the two parts below are NOT available separately?

okay Rodney, I'm about ready to try your fix (I've super-glued the 2 broken tabs, right and rear, but the rear one keeps breaking because the boot is so tight. I don't know if I need a screw up top as well as the bottom, but, looking from below, I don't see room in my boot for a screw up top:

And I'll tell ya, as haphazard as it is keeping that "chrome" piece in place when it's all together, holding this thing upside down it just falls out.....

So, I found this little plastic wedge among my "extra parts" tin, and screwed it into the back of the boot from below:

As it turns out, I can still remove the boot from the shift surround with this plastic piece in place:

Unfortunately, I test fit it all into the car, and now it pulls out at the top! Back to drawing board (and the "extra parts" tin).....

You should be able to get a screw in there. It does have to go in at an angle. I pre-drilled the hole and then used an "offset" screwdriver to get it in place.

The Rudeney method has now been successfully employed by some of the W203 folk!

Old thread but .. this just started happening to me. Doesn't look to good to your passenger when you shift into drive and the trim pops out.. lol. You think they could have spared just a little extra leather on the shift boot.

Anyway, simple solution for me.. gorilla glue worked like a charm

How do you take the knob off and pull the wood trim piece up? Just pry it up from the console using a wedge? Does the shift knob just spin off like most cars?

You do not need to remove the knob (in fact you can't) before removing the wood panel. Just open the ashtray and pull up on the exposed leading edge of the wood panel. Once you have it off the console, you will see a black plastic ring under the leather boot. Twist that (clockwise, I think) to unlock the knob. Now you can pull the knob off the shifter rod. It will be hard to pull, but if the lock ring is loose, it will come off.
