Do I have to replace the valve body when doing the conductor plate?

I have a 2006 clk350. I have a bad conductor plate for sure. Repair place says that I should do the valve body when they replace the plate. Any thoughts yes or no on this? I generally trust this guy but I haven't read this in any of the other threads dealing with this. Thanks

I also answered over on benzworld - if this is the typical 722.9 turbine speed sensor failure, then no, you just need a new sensor and a new conductor plate.

Thanks Rodney. It lowered my bill by about $700 US when I told him just to do the plate unless he saw a real problem with the valve body. Went from $1,495 for the trans work down to about $800. Looks like I am stuck paying $1,300 for the intake manifold though.

My understanding is that the conductor plate on the 722.9 cannot be changed unless the tech has a "live" licensed copy of SDS as they have to download the firmware update from MBZ corporate. If you get this done successfully by an indy w/o SDS, let us know because that contradicts what MBZ says is required.

Well he tells me it will be ready tomorrow at noon so I guess he isn't running into problems.

If you are replacing the conductor plate inclusive of TCU as I understand to now be the practice you have to cross flash the valve body calibration values to the new TCU.

Well got the car back. Yes they did have to program it. Apparently my guy knows a guy who shall remain nameless in a state that I can't mention who does nothing all day but get online with indi shops with his live SDS and reprogram these things online. Sounds like this guy has quite a business. My guy had to get in line this morning and wait for a call back from his guy.

the trans keeps going into limp mode. You have to turn it off and back on to reset it. At least in my case.

Ok. Not to jack the thread but I purchased a 07 350 Cab for the wife last Christmas with 68K. Around February or so, wife was coming home late one night and described what seemed like the car stuck in lower gear with rpm's revving to 30-40. She stopped the car and started back and problem gone. 3 months later it happened again, same symptons and both times no CEL. I was driving the car home on Friday and it happened to me finally. Was cruising ont he expressway and felt what seemed like a gear change but I was crusing at 65-70mph. Got off of expressway and didn't notice anything right away. Then I noticed that the rpms stayed at about 2k. Tried to put in manual shift mode and nothing. I was really close to home so I just babied it the rest of the way. When I parked I noticed that going from Drive to Rev was really rough with a sort of "thunk" heard from the rear end. Turned the car off and then back on again and all was fine. Luckily, I purchased a extended warranty for the balance shaft issue not even realizing the tranny issue. Does this sound like the same issue with the conductor plate and what all is normally replaced?

yes, on the 722.9 transmission, the typical failure is one of the turbine speed sensors. It was a defective part that will also damage the conductor plate that it attaches to. Both must be replaced.

Thanks Rud. One problem. With this happening so sporadically, do I just go ahead and take the car to my Indy and describe the problem to them and have them go ahead and contact the warranty company? I normally don't take a vehicle in until the problem is more frequent in nature.

You will need to involve the dealer on this. The conductor plate must be re-programmed, and that requires a "live" licensed copy of SDS. Mine does the same thing - it goes into limp mode once every few months. I will keep driving it that way until I have to have it repaired.

When my indi shop did mine has a guy with a live version that does nothing but updates for indi shops via internet. Indi has to call him in the morning to set an appointment for that day and then the guy calls them when their turn comes around. Wish I had more info on this but that is all he would say.
