Check for oil leaks on the valve/head covers. Specifically, the passenger side. The seals tend to start leaking and oil drips onto the exhaust manifold. It's a fairly easy and cheap DIY repair. Just use OEM gaskets - some aftermarkets (like Victor Reinz) are too thin and will leak even worse.

Funny you mention this. This is the exact reason why I'm changing my valve covers and spark plugs soon! Oil dripped onto the exhaust by the passenger side too! I wonder if this is a common issue? My 04 clk500 only has 65k miles

Yes, this is a common issue on all M112 and M113 engines. I don't see that the part numbers were revised, so my guess is that they just end up leaking over time. Luckily it's an easy and cheap repair.
