2005 CLK 320
w209 unwanted acceleration
Yesterday my wife was driving our 2005 CLK320 around town and all of the sudden the engine reved up to around 4000 rpm while in gear and sayed there. She put it in nuetral and coasted over to the side and turned it off. She restarted it and everything was fine and still is. The car has about 35k miles on it. The darnedest thing was that she didn't think to tell me about it until this morning. The blonde hair has nothing to do with it. Help with the car not the wife!

It sounds like the transmission went into "limp" mode. This locks it in 2nd gear so that you can drive, but even at moderate highway speeds, you will be turning some RPM. Sometimes the problem is just intermittent, and shutting down then restarting the engine will clear it. If it happens again, get the TCU codes checked (note that generic OBDII scanners usually won't work - you need a scanner that will read the TCU).

2005 CLK 320
update
Well,,,, I got a chance to thourghly question the wife and it appears she may have put the transmission into manual shift mode. When she shifted the tranny into park it went back to auto mode. Thanks for the help.

Yeah, I've learned that same lesson. When my wife makes a complaint about her car a thorough interrogation is in order.

I remember my driving driving my ML and doing this. She came home and said it "sounded load and smelled bad" Apparently she had downshifted into 3rd and ran down the highway at 70mph for 10 miles or so.
