07 CLK 350 code P0128 and fix
Figured I would share this one and see if it is common for this type of failure for a thermostat.
My car threw the P0128 code a week ago, and I watched the indications with help from this forum and determined I had a stuck open thermostat. No biggie. Waited for the part to arrive and performed the replacement at home yesterday.
When I got to removing the old thermostat it was obviously stuck. This was after I broke the seal around the gasket and had it out about 1/4 inch.
When it finally broke free I noticed a metal piece come out of the cavity. From the picture 2 of the 3 retaining bars were broken, however viewing the metal surface conditions of the two breaks I believe one broke before the removal and one during.
I think my thermostat did not get stuck open, but broke one of the 3 arms and was then dislodged allowing flow (heated up to 55-60 C then stayed put, even in 10-20 degree weather). This worries me if this is a common failure due to the posibility of a metal sharp getting lodged in the engine block, of either someone doing this repair and not catcing the shard on removal and it getting stuck in after a new replacement, or it breaking in a fashion that the shard can get into the engine block before replacement.
FYI for those interested.
