CLK500 door sill plastics removal

Hey all, So the i guess the clear plastic cover of my chrome door sill insert is coming off, and im wondering if it is safe to peel the whole plastic layer off? it appears to be clear plastic, something that would come on a standard packaged good, about paper thin. It is peeling off the chrome door insert pictured here. i assume the chrome will begin to rust if i take off the thin plastic layer? anyway to rewrap this? (this is a stock photo for representation)

Thanks!

You sure the coating was not supposed to be removed? Anyway, I would guess they are either stainless steel or aluminum, and not really chrome plated. No way to put a new layer of plastic on - you could clear coat them. On the other hand, if you have AMG sills on a 500, maybe letting them rust away is ok.

They are regular sills that say Mercedes Benz, I figured they might be the original plastic cover that came from the factory, but I figured with 84,000 miles they would have been taken off by now

Actually I've seen bunch of cars with that plastic peeling off. If you do peel it keep us posted. My right side sill has bubbled about half an inch in the middle.

Yup mine is bubbling too! Will do. If I peel it and see any
consequences I am going to laminate it
