Checking Trans fluid
So I haven't found a real definitive answer searching so I figured I would ask...
I have a 2007 CLK550 Cabriolet. I believe I am low on trans fluid. I came back from a 400 mile trip and when I got to a stop light it dropped out of gear, happened a few times until I shut it off. I figure it is a little low.
So from some of what I was reading there should be a capped off tube on the passenger side by the firewall. I need to go to a dealer and buy a dipstick.
Is that correct?
Thanks!
Joe

Unless your 722.9 is different than mine a year later, no. There is no plug, hole or place to measure fluid from on top. It is measured from below through the drain hole at 113 degrees F internal temp. But there are lots of other things that can cause your symptom. Unless you have a leak, fluid level may not be the problem.

well damn... I know there are other things just thought if I could check the fluid it would be the easiest thing to check off... doesn't sound like it though. Today it is acting fine. I will be doing this drive a lot so I will need to figure it out.

The 722.9 had some "teething" problems in 2006-2007 until revisions were made in order to address the problems that owners were facing.
Do some research on it here and you'll find plenty of info concerning this.

It might not have dropped out of gear - it might have gone into limp mode, which locks it in 3rd or 4th gear when an error is detected in the transmission. When you try to take off from a stop, it can really feel like it's not engage, but give it time and it will start moving.
If this is what is happening, the likely solution is a new conductor plate.

The 722.9 had a ton of "start up" problems. If it's valve body you can expect to pay around $1,600.
