C230 Kompy, 2005 S500
New to the forum and looking at a 2007 CLK550
Hello all,
Long time lurker here, Currently have a 2005 C230 kompressor I bought a year ago with a whole 27k miles on it. I love the car but need something with a bit more go to it. I found this 2007 CLK550. I am aware that this is not going to be as easy on repairs as my C230 but surely it will be more reliable than the VW Touareg it is replacing. I have read a lot about the balance shaft issues and am willing to buy an extended warranty.
The CLK550 in a question is a beautiful 2007 with 44k miles, looks like it was always serviced at a MB dealer. The Vin is WDBTJ72H37F207655. Do you guys feel this would be a good buy? I surely hope so. Is there anything else I should look for? Also did you guys opt for an extended warranty? Do you feel its worth it?

The VIN decoder is showing the car as a CLK 500 not 550 with a shipping date of 23.06.06.
The engine serial number is 056379 which is within the range of balance shaft failure (V8 M273 engines are affected up to serial number 088611).
Since it's an 06, you should also be aware of problems with the early batches of 722.9 7-speed transmissions.
To be honest, I would skip 06-07 models and go to 08-09 models since by then, the engine and transmission problems were solved. The other option would be to go for an 05 model with the reliable M112/M113 engine and the 722.6 5-speed transmission.

Assuming you straighten out what the car actually is, I agree that you should get an 08 or 09 if at all possible. I would not get an extended warranty, but I never buy them on anything. My factory warranty expired in April 2012 - 3 and a half years ago, and my repair costs that would have been covered if I had an extended warranty remain at exactly $0.

This is a USA car and the 10th digit of the VIN is a "7" so it's a MY2007. A June 6th 2006 delivery date just means it was a very early model. And the 550 vs 500 moniker is a strange thing - USA calls it "550" but other countries (and even internal MBZ docs) call it a "500". But this is definitely a 550 with an M273 5.5l V8. And that serial number is "in the range", so my opinion is to pass on it. Also note that the 722.9 transmissions in these earlier models tend to be more problematic. So, as advised, My2008 or MY2008 is a better choice.
