MB maintenance manual says every 65,000 miles or 5 years. Whichever comes first.

I believe yours is under your car, not in the fuel tank. It shouldn't be more than an hour's labor to change it.

FWIW.
1) Nothing wrong with following a service manual.
2) I have cut open fuel filters with 75K mileage and found them extremely clean with no debris or residue.
(I think that is related to modern top tier gas and gas pumps being filtered eg: the high quality of modern fuel requirements).
If you use "cheap" fuel or fuel at a rarely used or old fuel station it may be advisable to change the filter.
So, if easy to change...go for it.
If not so easy (or expensive) to change and you use top tier fuel you may possible delay...but that's your call.
I don't know the labor rate in your area or what book time is for this service.
Parts cost should be available on the net.
Why not call your repair shop and ask?
Good luck with your decision.
