Rodney,
I keep meaning to ask this - what is this Benzbits you always send links to? They seem to be freestanding images, but no home page where you can look stuff up.

Thanks Rudeney.
I have to take mine apart and oil the "Lock actuation". It gets stuck pulled in the 'open' position when it gets cold out. I tried spraying some lube in there but it just leaks down the license plate.

Yidney: Benzbits is my website. I use it to upload pics and docs to link to. I'm just too lazy to put an actual homepage on it. Someday I will do that and create a list of links to the docs that are there. I also have www.mercedesml.info, for stuff I used to post on the W163 forum. It's actually all the same webspace, just different URLs.

Took my trunk lid apart this weekend, thanks Rudeney.
Taking that whole panel off behind the license plate was unexpected. I had no idea there's only 5 screws holding it on.
I pulled the "Lock actuation" assembly out and lubed it all up.

Trouble removing the black plastic surround.
I am having trouble removing the rectangular plastic piece held on by 2 x T-15 screws and some kind of hidden tab.
Looks to be within the built-in handle; I see a tab cut into it, but I cannot figure out if I am supposed to pull it or push it or whatever to allow this piece to come off.
I have tried with no luck.
I'd rather not break it; can anyone help me with this, please?
Thank you and best regards,
-Lovetoflyfish

It has a small plastic hook tab under it. You have to slide it left or right (sorry, can't remember which way) to release it. But even if you break it, it still has screws holding it in place. That plastic tab is mostly as an assembly aid to hold it in place while the factory worker installs the screws.

So, I removed the plate and found the following (as best as I can tell):
The plate does NOT move to one side or the other; it rests on two tabs on the bottom side of the hand-hold and locks into the rectangular opening by the tab near the top (see pics).
*After the screws are removed*
You essentially pull the tab towards you to release the top part of the plate and pull/rock it towards you leaving the bottom of the plate on the ledge of the opening.
When the top has cleared enough distance, you can then lift the bottom away from the opening and remove the entire plate.
I broke off one of the bottom tabs and bent up the locking tab within the hand-hold, but as Rodney pointed out, the screws hold it into place.
