Shifter trim

My shifter trim (not the wood surround, just the trim with the C/S switch) broke again. When I shift to from P to D, the trim will come up a bit.

I changed it once a few years ago and I was lucky to have found an used part. Not sure if I have such luck now. Does anyone happen to know the part number?

I used screws to hold mine to the wood trim. Just pop the wood off then screw into the shifter boot trim from underneath (not into the wood)!

Not sure I understand. The trim sits on top of the wood!

When my console was taken apart in the past one of the clips was broken, so when I took it apart to get to the audio head unit, I saw this, and it also explained the marks I saw around the chrome trim of the shifter in the gap.

Basically, they had used some glue to stick it back on to the aluminium trim to hold it down. So when I refit everything, I had to use a small dab of cyano acrylate superglue to hold the shifter surround in place. It is now a tidy job, and as I only used a few small dabs, it won't hinder future removal, but it is sufficient to hold it still.

Below is a photo of what I did to repair mine. It just means that if I need to remove the center console (such as needed to work on the radio), I have to remove the wood panel, then disconnect the shifter knob from the lever:

I understand now, thanks.
This would be a lot of work. Maybe I will put in the screws if i have to remove the center console one day.

It's really no much work at all. The wood panel on the center console simply snaps in place - just open the ashtray and then pull up on its leading edge. There will be a few wiring harnesses to disconnect and then remove the knob from the shift lever - rotate it's retaining collar until it's loose, the pull up firmly on the knob.

I read wrong. I thought one has to remove the center console to remove the wood trim.

Is that the chrome ring under the knob? I need to remove the wood to buff out a scratch.

No, not the chrome ring. The wood has two clips at the front, and two "hooks" at the back. Pull it up at the front and forward, then disconnect the little harness. Then lift the whole thing up so the leather boot starts to invert over the shift knob - kinda like taking off a t-shirt - and that will expose a black plastic ring under there at the base of the shift knob. Turn that a quarter turn, then put the boot back down and pull up on the knob. All easier to do if you move the shifter to some position other than park.

Yeah I put the car in N when I do that since it's much easier. Just make sure the parking brake is set.

Do you guys have the part number (only the chrome piece)? If not too expensive, I would get a new one.

I see 2 part numbers: 203-267-2288 and 203-267-1988

Term

I called MB dealership today and while he was, confirmed that 2032672288. Hoes it for $591CAN. He was actually surprised so he confirmed that $591 does not include the shifter.

This is outrages because OEDiscountparts sells this extreme parts for $127US.

Anyone of you can suggest a site where i can buy this parts in a reasonable price. Even used parts in good conditon will fit the bill.

I did. It was my first repair when I got the car. It was somewhat easy fix.

I am in Canada and there will be an additional $35US shipping charge. If the parts is no good, to return the part will not be easy.

BTW, I remember the last time I replaced this shifter trim, I did not have to take off the wood trim. Is there a WIS somewhere? I understand there is a lock to the shift knob, is this lock inside the boot? Or maybe the actual lock is the the chrome ring between the knob and the boot?
