Seatbelt Issues

When I started my car this morning (2004CLK320), the seatbelt presenter of the driver side kept going in and out. It finally stopped but the seatbelt would not retract anymore. The seatbelt presenter also would not come out.....

I did some research in this forum and tried a few diagnosis. The dome light works when I open/close the driver door. Also, if I open the driver door when the car is moving, the malfunction came up.

I pulled both fuse 32 and 33. Now the seatbelt presenter works but stilll no retraction of the seatbelt. Is there another fuse of the seatbelt or it's purely mechnical?

Any help is appreciated.

NO LONGER ACTIVE
The seat belt retraction is purely mechanical. For some reason, the return spring system seems to get weak. I have to sort of hand my belt back into the spool to get it to retract.

Mine was getting slow as well before thie incident today, normal for the age of my car. This is my daily commute for the past 12 years. Imagine, this spring system has been used a few times a days for 12 years.

Do you have the part number? I may have to replace it.

Very good cleaning of the belt with magic eraser fixed that problem for me. Before it didn't go at all, I even was about to replace them but now they pull very well. And they are nicely clean as well now.

I did some research and the part number is 20986019859C94 for black seatbelt.

I found the following article and looks to me that to change the seatbelt, there is no need to remove the rear seats.

This is second step. Before doing that step you have to pull rear seats first. As per manual.

I looked at the diagram closely and it looks like the retractor is below the opening of side panel. So, the rear seat (bench) has to be removed first so to remove the lower side panel.

Based on the event that happened, I am still hopeful that the seatbelt is somewhat "went off the track" so maybe repairable.

I found a few places which specialize in seatBelt repair. One has to send in the old one and the turnaround time is one day. Of course, they don't work for customers outside US.

I have decided to change the seatbelt and just ordered the part.

Since the indie will have to remove the side panel, maybe I should ask him to look at the operation of the rear windows (possible regulator issue). I posted a thread about this issue 2 years ago and the issue remains the same, no better and no worse. What should he look for?

Symptoms:
1. When I opened my door, the rear window would go down a bit but not go backward at all.
2. When I closed the door, the rear window would move up a bit but not go frontward. This makes sense because it did not move backward when I opened the door.
3. After the door was opened, if I pushed the rear window backward, it would move up and frontward when I closed the door.
