CLK 63 - gearbox problem

Hi there,

I recently purchased a 56 plate CLK63 with 25K on the clock. After a couple of thousand miles of trouble free driving, the gearbox has developed a problem where it clunks/bangs back into first gear when downshifting, only when the engine/gearbox is cold. After 5 minutes of driving the problem disappears. I took the car into my local MB main dealer who reset all the software and checked the gearbox oil levels (which were normal), which helped to lessen the 'clunk' but its still there. They told me the next option would be too change the filters etc in the box, but i was concerned as they didn't appear to have any clue what could be causing the problem in the first place. Would appreciate any thoughts/shared experience of what this might be.

many thanks

Sorry to hear about your problem. So far no issues with my CLK63's. BTW, what is a "56 plate" CLK63?

Some 2006 / 2007 ml's have this problem with no apparent fix.

How bad is it? If it really hits hard the c clip retainers could have come loose inside. This is a known problem. Have them check and reset the adaptations. I would also do a transmission service just to see what is in the pan. I know it is not scheduled until 39k. I have not seen this problem on a BS but I do not see why it would be an exception for the c clips.

thanks for the advice re the c-clips, i'll get those checked out

as for the 56 plate - it's just the car reg numbering system used in the UK - equates to a 2006 reg

Thanks, I see you're new to MB World from England. Congratulations on your CLK. Speaking from personal experience they are great cars. But, sometimes when you post you really have to spell it out for us "yanks." across the pond! LOL
