maybe buying amg,, couple questions..

I might be trading a guy for a 2001 clk55 amg..... my main question is... there are single piston front calipers on it.... looks identical to the 430 of that same year... however.. it has amg steering wheel, amg exhaust tips, amg wheels, amg floor mats, V8, amg badges, amg engine cover, 2 spark plugs per cylinder and black wood in the interior,,,,,, did all 2001 clk amg's have dual front pistons?
How else would I make sure its an amg? finally are the 430 and amg brakes interchangeable?(same abutment bracket mounting points on the steering knuckle) thanks!

Well,

The 4 ways I proved mine was a AMG before I bought it were:

1. AMG on steering wheel (you can fake this pretty easy).
2. Cluster has AMG on it, which would be a bit more costly to fake but is still possible.
3. Run a carfax (vin number will tell you a lot - I forget which numbers to look at)
4. I had the oil pan dropped, looked up into the cylinders, and saw AMG stamped on the bottom of the pistons =D This method costed about $150.00 but it was worth it. It was also cool to see the silicone cylinder lining...

Hope this helps!

If you Carfax the whole Vin it should tell you. I cant recall which numbers in the vin tell you weather or not its real. As far as AMG vs CLk430 engine appearances, its really hard to tell.

"The position of each letter or number in the VIN code reveals important information about where and when your Mercedes was made, the type of engine it has, the model or series of the car, various equipment/attributes and its production sequence. Each character or digit has a particular purpose as follows:"

The AMG motor has an oil cooler mounted to the filter housing (shiney finned thing to the left of the filter cap), the 430 motors do not. Requires replacing the front cover. And the brakes, front brake calipers/rotors are much bigger than the 430s, and the rear rotors are vented not solid. The VIN will be WDB**74, the two asterics are where two letter would be, the main part is the 74. 74 = AMG. 70 = 430.

Like others have said VIN is the best way. Take the VIN to the MB dealer, and ask for a print out. IT will show what options it had and such, also it will note what model it is.
