W209 Nav unit installation

I would like to replace the factory radio in my ride.
To install a factory nav/radio unit in my 2003 CLK55, what else is required besides the nav unit? GPS antenna? Different wiring?
Does anyone have any knowledge about this?

Thanks in advance.

This has been discussed in the non-AMG W209 forum, which has more traffic. You might post there.

By the way, were you intending to install a factory nav unit that would have come in a 2003 55? If so, I think most people will tell you not to bother because it is an antiquated system and used CDs and not a DVD and I'm pretty sure no upadated maps have been created for several years for it. There are threads about updating pre-facelift cars to post-facelift systems, but that's pretty involved to get a nav system that is still a decade-old technology.

Thanks for the info on the antiquated system, but I would rather not infect the car with a non-factory unit installed by some butcher at the stereo store. I've been there and done that on a Porsche 20 years ago. Some of the installers don't know their a$$ from a hole in the ground. They stuck a speaker screw right through a wire harness, starting a small but containable fire inside the car. It set them back allot of $$ to replace the fried harness and other components.

I like the idea of keeping things original, The car stereo wiring is the most butchered harness on any vehicle.

My car came with the antiquated nav system and all is good for what I want out of it.
I researched the navigation disk @ the dealer and the upgrade discs are compatible with CD. W208. $220.00.

To integrate the nav to non nav-system might require fiber connectors and programming to accommodate the extra address on the fiber bus. If the OEM (stock) head has fiber interface it is easier. DD2 I believe is the architecture.

The W209 had more working room in the dash for larger display than the W208. There are still USB/DD2 kits available www.cartoys.com also www.newegg.com has a lot of gizmo's for the axillary port, I bluetooth from droid sometimes.

It is not evil to cut radio wires, engine wires (yes). Solder the connections for worry free operation.
If your car has steering wheel interface and the VSS input then the nave might have some compatible plug-ins.

All the best, Gator
