04 Harmonic Balancer Problem
Just looked at my HB looks like the rubber is shot and its starting to move back towards the engine, only 78k on the odometer.

I suppose this can happen to any car, I have seen it on many US engines but not Imports too much.
Oil eats rubber, Petroleum spray lubes eat rubber it is natural.
I do not see oil on that harmonic balancer but something might have wedged into the balancer like a piece of belt or road debris.
If you were roosting your tires in the neighbors front yard and the AC or ALT locked solid this might happen.
Some require a special tool for removal pending the clearance of fitment. Some simply slide off. Might be the case with Benz.
Some Chrysler products even require an installer tool (older V8).
If you have never changed one it is best to be prepared with at least the puller, inspect the timing cover and oil seal for damage once removed.
Cheers, Gator

Here's a excellent video on replacing the harmonic balancer on an M112 engine, basically the same as the M113. It needs a special tool, but it's pretty straight forward.
Good luck!

I should mention that the engine was making a slight knocking sound that would come and go, I suspected the lifters at first but the knock was coming from the lower front part of the engine, thats when I saw the HB pulley sliding back off the rubber. I used the HB holding tool and a 1" breaker bar to get the old one off still waiting to receive the new HB. So far the hardest part of the job is removing the radiator support to get the cooling fan out of the way.

That equates to roughly 125 000km. My car has 230 000km on the clock and never had that issue by the looks of it. Sure the belt used was the correct size?
Has anyone else experienced a bad crankshaft pulley/harmonic balancer on their M113 engines?

The new HB arrived today, tried to install it but the holding tool does not fit inside the pulley, the new pulley has a smaller inside diameter than the original one. I started grinding the outside edge of the holding tool to see if I can get it to fit inside the pulley, looks like a lot of grinding. This makes an easy job a big pain.

Got the pulley holding tool to fit after taking off about 1/8 inch with the angle grinder, HB is back on but did manage to snap the nipple off of the expansion tank so I replaced that as well.
Car is back on the road so far so good.

Did the lifter knocking sound also go away after your replaced the harmonic balancer? I have both a lifter knocking noise at warm idle in D or R and a coarse engine noise at high rpm.
After reading about your experience, this might be the same problem I am facing.

Lifter noise
Lifter noise is a custom clicking sound. It it internal to the top of the motor.
oil pressure weak or clogged galleries.
Once the oil pressure gets weak the rest of the engine starts to fail. Deep knocking on start up.
The lifters on m113 are tiny and collect varnish easy. It is an easy inexpensive fix.
I am afraid the other noises mentioned are rather price and require expertise in engine building.
Hope.this helps a few.
