CLS550 Exhaust

Hey guys,

I'm looking for an exhaust set up for my CLS550 w/ AMG package. I ordered a magnaflow x-pipe to replace the big resonator, however, I'm not sure if that will give me the sound I'm looking for. I also ordered quad tips, but supposedly a lot of fabrication will be needed to install them on my car.

I want a CLS63 sound or a C63 AMG exhaust sound. I'm looking to spend about $1,500. Do you guys have any suggestions? Should I just stick with my resonator delete for my x-pipe and put on the quad tips or should I opt for a whole different exhaust set up for the sound that I'm looking for?

Also, would a CLS 63, CLS55, E55 or C63 exhaust system fit my CLS550 without too much fabrication work? What would you guys recommend?

Thanks!

No idea about the exhaust, but my last car was a 350z Roadster as well.

could you explain what kind of sound are you looking for? as for quad tips, you just need to cut out a piece of your bumper to fit the extra tips. i am not sure if this is true, i think you can order just the bottom back piece of the cls 55 bumper at the dealership. but any shop should be able to cut the bumper for you.

as for replacing your resonator with an x pipe, you won't get huge volume gain. you will hear a difference at higher revs and at high speeds. the factory mufflers restrict the sound by quite a fair bit. i have a straight pipe and a flow master 30 muffler setup. it sounds sorta like a more refined truck engine. you can hear my car coming over a block away. there is quite a lot of droning in the cabin, but i like that kinda of feeling. i will post sound clips once i get back from my vacation.

What does that mean? One of the concerns I have is that my '09 has the trapezoid single tips and I'm unsure how the Meisterschaft will fit, or what needs to be done to make it fit. I'm pretty sure it won't fit within the space that's there, and as far as I can tell/see, the 2009 doesn't have a simple valance that can be replaced - the whole rear bumper and valance seems to be one piece. I don't have the budget to replace that.

I actually ended up buying a c63 agency power electronic valve controlled exhaust since I heard C63 exhausts can be easily modded to fit the CLS. However, I guess the agency power exhaust has bends that are hard to work with and all the fabrication would need tig welding since they're stainless steel. My exhaust guys good so he was fine with it, but he just didn't recommend it because it would be wayyyy too much work. So temporarily I got him to install the x-pipe in replace of the resonators and it sounds wayyyyy better. Close to the AMG sound, but still obviously quieter. I'll post a vid when I get a chance.

I really like the cls63/cls55 exhaust note though so I'll get them as soon as I find a good deal.

has anyone ever used something like this? This function of a variable opened exhausts come factory on Lambo and Ferrari... they open up as you accelerate. they say backpressure is required for torque but as you open it up it needs to fly free.

I don't know anything about that item, or who the mysterious "they" is, but torque is just as important at higher RPMs as lower. HP is torque times RPM, so if you lose torque you lose HP. I wouldn't want to lose torque at any RPM.
