Glow Plug Light problems. W220

Not able to answer your problem but posting here as I have something similar going on. From a cold start the light comes on for the usual two seconds and the car starts as normal. After a few seconds the Glow Plug light comes back on for a while, maybe 20 or 30 seconds then goes off again. Once the engine is warm this does not happen. The weather is getting colder; about 3 to 6 deg C at the moment. I have spoken to a friend who has a similar W220 and he says the light stays on for a long time. He just ignores it. Various questions: Is there a temperature sensor on the engine? Where is the box with the relays in it? What is it that determines how long the light stays on? Is this normal in cold weather - I have not noticed it doing this in previous winters.
