Power Steering Loss? Battery Light? 2008 CLS550

I have a 2008 CLS550. Tonight when we got home the red battery indicator came on. I went back out a few hours later and when I started the car (started fine, btw) the power steering was shot - I cannot turn the wheel. Is the battery and power steering related?
