I bought a 1999 MB E300 TD. The check engine light comes on sometimes and stays on. Other times when I start the car it doesnt it doesnt come on. It rides great. It passed NYS emissions inspection. MB service changed a relay for me but the problem persisted. I took it back. They told me it was a computer possible"charcoal filter" not working well. I was told all this does is control pollution amount from the car and doesnt affect performance. Piece costs about $1200. Is this something I should take care of or not? And can I get this piece cheaper somewhere else and have MB install? The check engine light is bright and really annoying! Thanks

Who told you that a "charcoal filter" was the problem? If the light is on, there will be a fault code that should show exactly what the problem is.
