chaffed power wire grounding intermittently
Took my 08 R320 CDI in for 40K service this week. I noted that the mileage was down. Average 27 on a trip to Florida and back. I knew we had bought some funky diesel and was concerned that it may have damaged the emission's system so I asked that they ckeck it out.
What they found was the wire for the exhaust tempature sensor was chaffed. they: 'ran short test and found a failure code of 1436-002 current in CDI6 module'. 'performed test of temp sensor upstream of diesel particulate filter - found chaffed power wire grounding intermittently to transmission housing - performed wiring repair - cleared code.
Does anyone know what the effect this wouldhave on the emission system (I am assuming this relates to it burn out control).

Maybe the DPF needed a regeneration & the upstream temp sensor was not indicating enough exhaust gas temp for the engine to go into regen mode.
Your low mileage could be caused by the blocked DPF.
The other possibility is ( purely conjecture ) is that the engine was in regen mode ie rich mixture causing more fuel consumption.
Will be interesting to see if your mileage improves now.

We are on another trip right now. unfortunately this one has required the Thule be used so i won't have anything to compare the florida mileage too. our first fill up (from Indianapolis to Lebanon Mo) yielded an even 26 mpg @ 70 MPH. That's probably an ok number. The tripcomputer was indicating 24 MPG. The second fill will cover a lot of around town and short trips were we are staying (lots of up and down small hills).
