c220 cdi auto gear oil change
Hi,
My service book shows I need to change gearbox oil shortly but cant find any detail about how much oil I will need to get and the type of oil? Any ideas?
Car is a 2006 model SE. I want to buy the oil and then get a garage to do the work

5 or 7 speed? 5-speed is easy to work on it, 7 is little more complicated. This is a link to all MB fluids and you will most likely need 236.12 or 236.14 spec fluid.

And I am attaching my procedure in PDF format (the way I did it for my 5-speed). You will find variation on it but this work for me.

I used the Fuchs Titan 4134
http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/236.14_en.html
Mercedes 220 CDI Changing ATF 50,000 km/4 years.
Did my first MB ATM oil change at 4 years / 50,000 km. ( MB sheet suggests 3 year/50,000 km) Not a lot different from the Peugeots I have done over the years.
I write this to share the experience & benefit of leaving the auto transmission drain for an extended period to maximise the amount of oil drained. There is no torque convertor drain.
I checked the level on the dipstick( 25'C ) before hand & it seemed a little over filled . The filler cap tell tail was broken so the dealer mechanic must have topped it up after the rear gearbox seal was renewed during warranty.
I dropped the drain plug & after about an hour or so 3.375 litres had drained.
I left it draining over night ( 19 hours) & recovered a further 1.5 litres.
A further .75 litres was found in the pan when removed.( carefully!)
Oil retained in the filter was .125 L
Making a total of 5.75 litres drained.
I refilled using 5.75 but after obtaining running temp ( 80'C) found the level a little high as anticipated . I siphoned out .250 L from the dipstick tube to show a level at the high mark ( 80'C).
To summarize :- 1. 1.5 litres extra was drained if left for an extended period.Experts may be able to tell me if this oil came from the torque convertor?.
2. 5.5 litres of oil was required to fill the GB to the top of the 80' C mark . WIS states that approx 5 litres is required to fill the gearbox after draining !! . But they do not state how long to drain. Oil was still dripping from the drain after 19 hours.
3.Wis states that the GB holds a total of 7.5 litres including torque convertor therefore 73 % of the oil was changed.
4.If just draining from the drain plug & not removing the pan 62% of the oil would be drained.
I used Fuchs Titan AFT 4134 @ A$14.30 / Litre.( 20 litre box)
Transmission Dipstick from KTC Auto Tools USA $20 + $15 postage to Aus.
ATM oil filter A$30.31
ATM gasket A$32.34.
Lock pin A$ 2.20.
Total cost for changing ATM oil = A$ 143.50. ( excluding 2.5 L siphoned out & dipstick cost ) including the pleasure & experience gained doing so.

There is no time requirement for ATF change, only distance driven as you can see from both pictures that are attached (MB and Fuchs required ATF change close to 63000/60 000 km respectively).
Transmission capacity is variable depending on the type of the transmission and the gearing, which depend on the engine and driveline that is it coupled with (diesel/gas 4 Matic/RWD). Type of the transmission will also vary based on the power/torque output in same engines.
For example, Fuchs says that I need 7.5 liters of ATF fluid as you can see from the picture (I used my car as reference), but I actually need 8.6 because I have 722.626-type transmission.

Regarding the service time requirement my Australian handbook states :-
"Every 50,000 km /3 years -Automatic Transmission :change oil & filter ( C280,C320,CDI ,C350)" Please see attachment given to me by my dealer..
PS, I thought your write up was excellent. I have saved it for future reference.

In the USA, the 722.6 trans service recommendation has evolved through the years.
Went from factory filled for life, to change once at 60k km, to change every 60k km.
I'd change it every 60k km if it was mine. The 722.6 is picky about fluid and quantity and if they slip or act up they chew themselves up before you can pull over and shut it down usually. The first change on my 99 E300 (same trans) at ~150k miles the purple/red fluid was thick brown and looked and smelled like 80/90Wt gear oil. 2nd and 3rd change it was much better but still was redish brown with clutch debris suspended in the fluid.

I was quoting the 7.5 litres on my W204 C Class 722.64 GB.

Just took a look at Wis . My 722.640 atm takes 7.5 litres initial charge.
The 722.643 tales 8.7 litres.
Its complicated!!
The change interval for the USA is 34,000 miles. I would not go above this.

You did not input the last digit of your trany, thus why I put it in .643 group, sorry. As of the changing interval, I think that MB settled at 40000 miles for USA, but this is for ATF change and not for full ATF flush, thus replacing 75% of the ATF vs. 100% or 40000 vs. 50000 miles. ¾ fluid replaced gives you around 13333 miles per ¼ part fluid replaced so I think w/full flush I will be good to 50000.
