c220 louder than normal

My C220 has been louder than normal. There is an extra clatter that I hear from inside the cabin that was not there a few days ago (from outside you can't tell there is a difference in the sound of the engine). It is annoying and specially when revving.

I have looked at the engine (I took the plastic cover off) and there is nothing that would jump out of the ordinary, like oil, fuel stain or soot near the injectors.

I just had to replace the infamous EIS switch less than a month ago and I would hate to have to take it back to the dealer.

What could I check before taking it back? I changed the engine oil (synthetic) about 4000 km ago (about 7 months) but the air filter looks darker brown, could that cause the louder than usual noise?

Most air cleaners are a light yellow colour when new. My service manual says change at 70,000 km or 4 yearly. In dusty conditions it is best to change it more regularly.

Cannot see why it would increase engine noise unless it is very dirty.

Engine clatter is very subjective unless it is measured. eg my clatter is louder when standing up against a concrete wall or when in an environment with no sound. Losing sound insulation makes a big difference , Check underneath .

Interested to know how many Km the car has done ?

Not run in yet.

Make sure your air cleaner casing is assembled correctly after removal with no leaks.

Interested to know what the dealer says.

How much did the EIS switch put you back ? . Do you have a 2008 ?

You drive a six year old car, everything gets louder with age like wine and wifes, therefore make sure you remove all the empty wine bottle from the boot---the wife that's another story!!

Well yes I know that with time the engine sound will be different from when it was new, but form one day to the next it should not change so much.

Check the engine cover as well. The O-rings that hold it in place tend to loosen up and the cover can create quite a racket. just pull it off and get in your car and see if it is quieter. Good luck

Check the rubber supports of the air filter box. That solved it for me.

thanks,

I will take a look at it but it sounds more like if there was a leak in the exhaust, not like a rattle. Also, it seems to be louder in the morning when the engine is cold. (keep in mind that the weather is between 80 and 90s in here year round)
