Are you supposed to do anything differently?
Typically you don't show anything on the instrument panel if it is not "actionable", and I wonder is the warning so you know what is happening in case you feel it driving differently, or if there is some thing you are not supposed to do.
(I can't imagine you are supposed to drive past your destination just because it is in regen?)

It drives normaly, at least I did not feel any difference. It started when I was going to Lowe's and was not affected by stop and go driving but I decided to take it on the highway between the city exits so it does regenerate quicker, plus the store I was going is located on one of the highway exits. When stopped rpm stay in normal range, so I am not sure what changes beside the post injection when regeneration starts. If you stop and turn it off it will not complete and will have to do it again after you start the car.

Seems on line there are a lot of people commenting on the diesels with DPF lights and messages.
I wonder how MB has made it seamless for two generations of engines now?
Are we just blissfully unaware, or do our diesels really require less attention to DPF regen cycles?

I really cannot believe there is anything unique about MB regeneration techniques. A succesful regen will require > 600F and about 15 mins (continously) to effectively rid of soot on the DPF. For those who drive less than 10 miles daily - I do not understand how an effective regen will ever occur. So much so in winter. Some companies even require that you maintain >2000 rpm during the entire time.

I would agree about the time needed. Just surprised there is no notification system in our cars, and considering the number of MBs that are grocery getters, we don't see a rash of failed/plugged DPFs.


I do my best to avoid short trips in the GL since my goal is another 100K miles.
Although knowing I can get it cleaned for about $500 has taken some of the concern away.

I can not find anything on those two codes, I don't even know what the stand for.

Regrettably I could not find any cross reference to OBD codes P1536\1538 within the MB light transporter with your VIN(Sprinter)

In my opinion that typically means that the scannar is NWAS!! I believe you do not have many options!!

If me I would go to specific Sprinter forums for help

Most scannars that I am famuliar will provide a fault number,but also provide some short generic fault description and although the fault code number may be different between scan mfgs and the car manufacturer, the description is typically the same.

On the Sprinter their are about seven MB DPF faults with varing descriptions, therefore to determing the corresponding fault what are the Maxidiag fault code descriptions????

Btw, I'm pretty sure smaller motors which run in normal operation under higher loads, as in increased chamber pressure, boost pressure and EGT's, will require much less frequent regen cycles to keep a DPF clean. Giant 6-8 liter truck motors run around at idle power so can clog up DPF much more easily. Just a thought, happy to be proven wrong.

I am not sure about this. I would say that is more likely based on fuel quality. Why I am pointing in this direction, well because first regeneration after we picked the Jeep was right at 217 miles - car was filled up at the dealership and last for about 15 miles. After this I filled up at 400 miles and I add 3 ounces Diesel Thread 2000. Second regeneration was at 740 miles and was over in 5 miles. Same commute every day, nothing changed beside the additive and different Shell station but the mileage was more than doubled between.

I do not want to start the fire about additives pluses and minuses, but after I pull my intake yesterday to replace it (thinking that is badly clogged up around the flaps) just to find very small build up (may be 1 mm on each side) on them I am willing to say that they do more good than bad. Car has 105000 miles and I have been using DT 2000 for last 60000.

Just had DPD cleaned for $609.88. in Melbourne Florida.
2008 E320, 175K miles, Florida only use, 20% hghiway 80% city
Sure runs great afterward.

Funny watching these old threads get revived from time to time.

VW TDI will continue to run the radiator fans and smell like burning when the engine is turned off during a regen cycle. I saw the DPF warning light once or twice when I was making frequent short trips, so I changed my driving habits a bit. Finding reasons to go 130mph on the autobahn (when I lived in Germany) and I never saw the light again.

Our GL350 Bluetec is mostly a grocery getter and kids to school vehicle so I have to find excuses to take the keys from my wife and get it on the Highway regularly if she doesn’t.

I doubt 130 mph does big difference to DPF regeneration.
I drive my Sprinter with ScanGauge all the time and regeneration is pending even when I coast downhill for 5-7 miles. So ECU is not giving fuel for power stroke, but is giving fuel on downstroke to push burning fuel down to DPF.
DPF temperature drops only slightly when engine is not pulling, but gets pulled.

Sarcasm doesn’t translate well into forum posts. I don’t really think the higher speed makes a lot of difference but the point being that actually getting the motor warmed up and running it a while is important.

Not per my experience again.
It happen before that DW aborted the regeneration coming home.
Following day I drove the car observing ScanGauge and regeneration resumed once the coolant reached 60C.
So engine was barely warm, yet computer continued with regeneration.
That was in city driving, where I was stopping at red lights. Than to my disbelieve, the computer would still do ECO engine shut downs with pending regeneration.

So the vehicle interrupted regeneration when shut off, then resumed the next day once the car was running? Interesting

Meaning using sedan for city driving, I usually have end of the trip in just few miles.
Would the regeneration start at the beginning of longer trip, I would not worry about couple of ECO stops during regeneration.

Still need to get a monitor to figure outhow they do the regens on these things. My truck when i had all the stuff on it was pretty easy to figure out, fuel mileage would go down and temp come up slightly and could hear ticking go up from the scr valve working overtime. It also had a distinctive smell but it also a much larger engine. It also wouldnt go into regen until up to temp and i think few other parameters had to be met. Still getting use to the benz.
