glow plug system difference 05-06 6 inline versus V6 07-09
hello everyone
I'm wondering if there is a improvement / change in between the management of the two engines (648 / 642) glow plug system.
I believe not!
on the 05-06 (six inline engine 648) the system works on glow plug 5V with a controler (glowplug time output stage), that does pulses the 12V to the glow plug to acheived an instant glow.
I would like to know if the 642 works exactly the same. That will mean that both part will be interchangeable even if mercedes doesnt say that. From the outside they are identical.

07-09 BERU A642 153 22 79
I gave you 2 pics of the A648 module outside and inside
Inside you may see the 6 SCR (4 side by side and two lay back) that push out the power.
thanks for your advise
have a good ride

Its not that simple. The 642 uses two different set ups. Some are 11V, some are 5V. The Jeep and Sprinter use the 11V system, the ML/GL/R use the low voltage set up (5V glow plugs cost twice as much, ONLY NGK available nothing else so far). Not sure what the E320 takes, I believe the 5V.
I have not had both OM648 add 642 plugs side by side, they might be similar.
There are lots of problems with the 12V system, it is very common to read about replacing the glow plug module on Jeeps and Sprinters, not so much the Mercedes SUV's for whatever reason.
