Looking at a 1987 300D this week
With 120k on the clock (low mileage?), single owner (90 year old man, friend of my grandparents). He wants $2750 for it, and says the only problem is the A/C does not work (common I read, but somewhat of a PITA). New tires.
Is $2750 a good price if it is in good shape?
I am somewhat familiar with the earlier 190D cars (have a buddy with 3 of them) but am unsure of the value of the later vehicles. I have read the buyer's guide here: (http://www.w124performance.com/docs/...uying_tips.txt), so I am aware of the common issues. How's that price sound?
I've had it in the back of my mind to get into MB diesels for about 4 years now, but have never actually done it. Should I just stay away for my own sake, or are they worth it? I'm not in need of a vehicle at the moment, but it seems like an interesting ride...
Thanks!

I had a 1987 300D - One of the best performing diesels Ive had. You can go 80-90 mph with ease. The I-6 turbo was too powerful for the W124 body so it was discontinued after 1987 and MB went with the 5 cyl turbo diesels in succeeding years. The same I-6 remained only on the S class sedans after 1988. Find one w/o rust and keep it. I only wish they had this engine in a coupe version - that would have been a classic. The 87 300TD is slowly becoming a rarity. I had my 87 trap oxidizer recall done in 2007 - 20 yrs after the car was made ! The parts+service alone costs more than the car itself - go figure.
