1996 E300 engine swap

Now this is a future project plan. The car still runs and drives great with 318K on the clock. The engine is starting to get tired and smoke a little more, and the trans has been slipping a flaring for a good 35-40K. When things finally start letting go, I was planning on a late model OM606 turbo swap and manual transmission and some custom fabbed performance parts to make a fun weekend car.
Now, is the 96 ECU compatible with a 98-99 engine, or would I need to do the mechanical IP swap as well?

You gotta be from Hicksville-----The ECU is not compatible because the engine is controlled differently, forgetting about the transmission control.

Do yourself a huge favor---what ever engine/transmission and dif you choose, also take all the engine and transmission controls with the metal and on diesels that also means the IP!!

No I'm from Islip Terrace. My transmission is a vacuum unit and being done away with. I have a 5 speed already from an e46 BMW, and a machine shop to build an adapter plate and clutch setup for a good price, so Trans control is not needed. This is precisely why I was asking about the mechanical IP, because I'm trying to limit the amount of re-wiring I have to do. Now the question I have is, does a mechanical IP have a 12V governor shutoff that I can relay into the factory ignition system? Custom fabrication of things I am not worried about, but I hate pinpointing electrical issues, so I'm trying to maintain the mechanics of an old school diesel. Thanks for the prompt replies, though. I still have a ton to learn about the extent of the electrical involvement of older Benz Diesels.

The most sensible way to learn all about MB diesels is spend the 18 bucks for a 24 hour subscription to MB's Startek WIS, put a diesel VIN in or configure a car of your choosing in and away you go.

Additionally get a free subscription to MB's EPC(electronic parts catalogue)
